The Unset
Adelaide-based power trio The Unset have become a distinctive voice in Australia’s alternative and progressive rock landscape. Fusing the dynamics of modern alt-rock with textured experimentation, the band strikes a rare balance between accessibility and artistic depth—drawing comparisons to Oceansize, A Perfect Circle, and The Butterfly Effect.
Formed in 2016 by high-school friends Elian Hamilton and Simon Ielasi, later joined by Aaron Lawrence (iiah, We See Moons), The Unset released their debut EP ‘Polymer’, whose lead single ‘Solipsism’ won the national public-voted ‘Best Song’ award in the ‘Captured Australia’ competition. Follow-up singles ‘Hunter’ and ‘Nice’ showcased the band’s growth—merging anthemic hooks with electronic and atmospheric elements.
Their reputation as an engaging live act has seen them share stages with Cog, sleepmakeswaves, Caligula's Horse, Khan and The Mark Of Cain. In 2025, a last-minute call-up to support Karnivool cemented the band’s rising profile, earning critical praise and a new wave of fans.
Recent releases ‘Decay/Bloom’ and ‘Slate’ have drawn local and international attention ahead of the EP they sit on, ‘Decathect’. These works mark a new creative phase—refined, cinematic, and ready for national exposure.
Across its five tracks, Decathect examines the erosion of truth and meaning in an era of misinformation, the rise of cynicism and populism, and the quiet persistence of hope that follows collapse. What began as a premonition became a mirror — reflecting the strange, fractured world that emerged during and after the pandemic.
With a clear artistic identity, proven live credentials, and growing industry momentum, The Unset are positioned to move from respected emerging act to a professional presence within Australia’s contemporary rock scene.
"The Unset have enormous potential and are a band ready to be signed. They have a powerful sound that defies any labels or putting neatly in a particular box."
Rob Lyon, Hifi Way
“...The Unset stepped in at only a few hours’ notice to deliver a seismic and brooding set that complemented the headliners’ ethereal sound perfectly.”
Michael Lockheart, The Note
